TrakCare Solution Guide
Overview
Today, in leading healthcare organizations in 25 countries, InterSystems TrakCare™ is enabling the vision of connected healthcare to become a reality. It is making the delivery of healthcare more effective and efficient – by improving safety and outcomes, keeping costs under control by eliminating duplicate tests and other redundancies, expediting billing, and maximizing resource utilization.
TrakCare is a Web-based healthcare information system that provides a full range of clinical, administrative, lab and community care capabilities, unified by a single data repository. So patient information can be shared securely and seamlessly across all major departments and care settings. With an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) at its core, this is advanced software that brings exponential improvements to the care of every patient and to the productivity of every healthcare professional.
TrakCare is used in diverse settings, including acute care, community care, emergency departments, and multi-disciplinary polyclinic practices. Any Trak- Care module can be quickly implemented to solve immediate, pressing problems, or modules can be adopted as a unified portfolio to serve more expansive needs.
TrakCare modules are preconfigured and automated installation routines simplify data upload. Together with supporting installation, setup, and training documentation, this ensures that TrakCare can be deployed in stages.
For doctors and nurses, working with TrakCare means less time spent searching for information, and more time spent with patients. Unlike similar products, TrakCare can be easily tailored to fit your information requirements and workflow preferences without code changes.

What sets TrakCare apart from other leading healthcare information systems (HIS) is that TrakCare enables users to quickly derive the benefits of an EPR. Our unique approach combines TrakCare’s unified information environment, advanced database and integration technology, and expert implementation team. Our deployment methodology is a breakthrough when compared to alternative ‘rip and replace’ HIS that can take years to enable an EPR, if they are successful at all.
The benefits of an EPR occur early in a TrakCare deployment. Each TrakCare module has at its core a shared EPR and Master Patient Index (MPI), all sitting on a single database. The EPR captures the continuum of clinical and administrative information about a patient, and is fully configurable to fit the individual preferences of clinicians and administrators. The MPI is a central resource for uniquely identifying patients, and can be run as a stand-alone product within an organization, or it can be implemented as part of a larger state or national system.
Due to the advanced integration capabilities embedded in TrakCare, its EPR and MPI can be easily connected to legacy applications and data. So from the moment one or more TrakCare modules are deployed, you start to enjoy the benefits of having an EPR – immediate access to all the information needed to improve patient care.
TrakCare Is a Functionally Rich HIS that Leads
the Market in Interoperability and Flexibility

Web-based Architecture
TrakCare enables authorized healthcare professionals to look at a complete patient record from anywhere they have access to the Web. Because it was natively designed for the Web, TrakCare provides very fast response times over the Internet and requires little in the way of computing bandwidth or power. Since it is Web-based, TrakCare also offers the hardware cost benefits of a thin client while minimizing the IT and administrative overhead associated with software upgrades in a traditional client/server environment.
A Single Data Repository
Much of the power of TrakCare derives from the fact that all of its modules share the same data model, patient-centric focus, and a single high-performance database, InterSystems Caché®. So TrakCare’s modules do not require integration with one another, saving time and expense. Since TrakCare was built as one unified system, TrakCare’s modules require just one login for users, and data entered once is immediately available throughout the system. Plus, healthcare information systems built on Caché are known for their high performance and scalability.
TrakCare’s unified information environment provides several benefits: simplified sharing of information, faster implementation, lower costs, and easier maintenance.
Interoperability with Other Systems
TrakCare is built upon InterSystems Ensemble®, rapid integration technology that enables TrakCare to be easily connected to legacy applications and data. Therefore, TrakCare’s EPR can be readily extended to include information from third-party systems while preserving existing technology investments.
TrakCare Works the Way You Work
TrakCare’s unified information environment provides several benefits: simplified sharing of information, faster implementation, lower costs, and easier maintenance.
The rigidity of most HIS solutions requires healthcare professionals to either adapt processes to mirror the solution or face lengthy and costly custom implementation projects. The laborious process of creating specifications that detail project phases is notorious for delaying HIS implementations. If everything is not defined perfectly, or when specifications change, these systems are frustratingly difficult to modify. At Inter- Systems, we understand your desire for a healthcare information system that works the way you work.
With TrakCare, users can be up and running quickly, with powerful tools to readily tailor their systems as and when they choose, providing a futureproof solution that can rapidly address changes in technology, administration, and healthcare policies without expensive, lengthy recoding. Two examples are the Workflow Manager and the Layout Editor.
The Workflow Manager facilitates business process flow in an automated way. It establishes a desired sequence for tasks to be performed depending upon conditions and functions required by the user, as well as secondary processes such as print jobs, alerts, and messages.
Embedded Analytics
Embedded in TrakCare is TrakCare Analytics, software that facilitates business process analysis and optimization using live operational data. TrakCare offers a library of over 100 pre-configured dashboards, enabling more efficient operations, timely decision making, risk identification and tracking of metrics against key performance indicators.
