12 Public Hospitals Share Electronic Health Records for 200,000 Patients with Support for Administrative and Clinical Functions; Analytics and Community Health Planned
MELBOURNE– July 15, 2013 – InterSystems, a global leader in software for connected healthcare, today announced that the South West Alliance of Rural Health (SWARH) in Victoria has reached another milestone towards implementing a regional electronic health record (EHR) system. Based on InterSystems TrakCare®, a unified healthcare information system, a new Patient Administration System will serve 12 public hospitals across the region.
SWARH has been running TrakCare’s Clinical Information System, which serves 200,000 patients, for several years. The new TrakCare Patient Administration System is configured to meet the needs of both large and small hospitals across the region. Providing all administrative and clinical functionality within a unified system eases access to healthcare information, improves care coordination, and reduces SWARH’s technical support overheads.
TrakCare connects 12 acute public hospitals and 114 sites spread across 60,000 square kilometres in South West Victoria via a secure broadband network. Clinicians can already access pathology reports and clinical risk factors online within seconds, and issue patient discharge summaries to general practitioners. Ward staff are immediately alerted of new test results from external pathology providers. With videoconferencing, doctors can consult with patients in remote areas while viewing their medical records online.
“By implementing Patient Administration within the same system, we now have the power to do more with the electronic health record. We are working with InterSystems to implement new clinical functionality over the next six months, with electronic medication management and support for new national quality standards for clinical care at the top of the list,” said Garry Druitt, Executive Officer for SWARH.
SWARH also plans to implement TrakCare Analytics and TrakCare’s Community Health functionality across the region, using a single data repository. “When we implement TrakCare Analytics, we will be able to access administrative as well as clinical information to analyse things like public health outcomes, operating theatre usage, or accuracy of diagnoses based on a set of clinical observations,” Mr. Druitt said.
The planned implementation of TrakCare Community Health will complete SWARH’s vision of a connected healthcare environment across the region. Further ease of use benefits and systems cost savings are also expected when its legacy community health application is phased out.
“Bringing community health on board closes the loop with a single system for healthcare delivery across the continuum of care,” said Mr. Druitt. “In the future, all the members of a multi-disciplinary treatment team caring for a hip replacement patient, for example, will access the same system with functionality that facilitates the coordination of care. That means a hospital-based physiotherapist would be alerted to previous physio assessments and know that a post-operative patient is strong on one side before starting rehabilitation.”
“SWARH is a leading Australian example of how healthcare organisations and technology providers can work together to improve the delivery of healthcare using a shared Electronic Health Record,” said Darren Jones, Australian Country Manager at InterSystems. “With the completion of Patient Administration, SWARH now has the infrastructure it needs to achieve further breakthrough benefits with data analytics and the coordination of care across different settings.”
