Australian-developed ReplicaUSB extends ‘backup to database’ concept to virtualise Windows applications, secures mobile data for spatial data information specialists AAMHatch

Sydney, Australia – August 6, 2008 – InterSystems today announced that Australian-based software developer, Replica Data Security, has launched ReplicaUSB, leveraging the power, security and small footprint of the InterSystems Caché® high-performance object database to virtualise Windows applications and create a total data security, protection and mobility solution suitable for even the most sensitive information. ReplicaUSB plugs into any Windows computer so mobile users do not have to carry a laptop.

ReplicaUSB solves this problem with a truly secure mobile data solution supporting 3-factor user authentication, including fingerprint scanning, and encrypted USB storage, replication and offsite backup. By virtualising the Windows file system, ReplicaUSB allows backup to both the USB and a secondary offsite location, secure transport of sensitive files and Windows applications like Microsoft Outlook from one computer to another, and secure collaboration.

ReplicaUSB has already been recognised for its innovative approach to making information mobile, winning the 2008 NSW iAward for security applications. Replica Data Security is also in discussions with education organisations in Europe to create ‘paperless schools’ which do not require students to own and carry their own laptop computers.

The solution has been successfully deployed at AAMHatch, a leading Australian spatial information provider involving aerial surveying, mapping, data modelling and geographical information systems. ReplicaUSB allows AAMHatch staff to securely transport sensitive documents between home and work PCs, backup mobile data and access collaboration files from their home offices. Encrypted data can only be viewed on the USB if the host PC is logged onto AAMHatch’s domain either locally or via VPN so the user can be validated. All data movement is audit trailed, so AAMHatch is able to monitor exactly who is accessing specific documents and what they are doing with them.

“While USBs are a convenient way to move information around they are a serious security risk in the event of loss or failure,” said Ian Dewey, IT Manager for AAMHatch. “With ReplicaUSB we can extend our existing information security policies to also secure and protect data carried on USBs.”

The ReplicaUSB solution is an extension of Replica Data Security’s enterprise solution which introduced the revolutionary ‘backup to database’ concept for securing, managing and sharing enterprise-wide data from laptops, PCs and servers. ReplicaUSB uses the InterSystems Caché database, running in a virtualised environment on the USB, to virtualise the Windows file system and applications.

Storing file data into a database for data security and backup is unique to Replica Data Security. ReplicaUSB is also the first application to run Caché from a USB drive without requiring any installation or access to the host computer’s registry or hard drive. All data managed by Replica is encrypted to the 256-bit Rijndael Advanced Encryption Standard and stored within Caché, a Common Criteria Level 3 Certified database.

Using the backup to database concept, multiple versions of files are stored as deltas, or lists of differences between new and old files, compressing storage on the USB and minimising the bandwidth required to replicate or automatically backup files. The Caché high-performance object database provides the ability to store and manage the large number of objects generated, while speeding up performance compared with a traditional file system.

“Caché is the only database running on Windows offering the necessary power, security, small footprint and object support to make ReplicaUSB a practical solution for mobile information,” said Replica Data Security’s Mike Malone.

When ReplicaUSB launches, the user is prompted for their fingerprint and logon, and optionally, the system checks that the host computer is logged onto the organisation’s domain and is authorised to access this information. If the authentication is passed, ReplicaUSB opens a simple Windows Explorer style interface that allows users to run Windows applications virtualised on the USB, view and edit stored files, access collaboration files, or restore desired versions of files.

If a ReplicaUSB is lost or stolen, the data is protected by 256-bit encryption, fingerprint authentication, valid domain logon required and Replica logon. It can even issue a command for the data on the USB to be completely destroyed the next time the USB detects an Internet connection. Just as importantly, the data on the USB can be easily recovered from the secondary offsite backup location.

A fingerprint scanner is built into the most secure version of ReplicaUSB, based on technology from another InterSystems partner, Newport Scientific Research. If organisations do not require fingerprint authentication, a lower cost option is available to install the software on a standard, high-quality USB key.

Availability and Pricing

ReplicaUSB is available via resellers and USB manufacturers. Replica Data Security, formerly known as QMSoftware, charges a monthly fee for each USB the software is used on. This supports resellers’ preferred pricing models, which are also based on monthly charges.
