Performance, Productivity Increases Critical to Support Rapid Growth Of Billing System
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—July 13, 2009— InterSystems Corporation today announced that Providence Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML) has rolled out a new-generation billing system built on the InterSystems CACHÉ® database. Just a few weeks after going live, the application is delivering significant, measurable benefits, according to Sonny Varadan, PAML CIO.
“The move from our legacy platform to CACHÉ has enabled us to cut month-end processing time from 47 hours down to six hours—an 88 percent decrease,” Varadan said. “Nightly processing runs that took about four hours are now complete in less than an hour. And, queries that took anywhere from six to eight hours to process during the day now come back in minutes,” he continued.
Ranked among the top clinical reference laboratories in the U.S., PAML serves physicians, hospitals, members of the community, employers, and other allied health professionals. Recognized as an industry leader in joint venture partnerships with community-based hospitals, PAML delivers a wide range of services to a core market that includes Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California, Utah, and Alaska.
The global leader in software for connected healthcare, InterSystems develops and markets innovative database, integration and business intelligence products. CACHÉ is the leading database in healthcare, enabling rapid Web application development, extraordinary transaction processing speed, massive scalability, and real-time queries against transactional data.
Migrating to Support Business Growth
An aggressive growth strategy drove the decision to transition to CACHÉ, according to Varadan. “PAML now processes literally millions of billing dollars,” he explained. “We currently support 23 billing services and we’ve just brought on two new hospitals as joint venture partners. Our legacy billing system was entirely too slow and couldn’t scale to the level needed to keep up with our growth and provide the stability we require.”
In-depth examination revealed that CACHÉ provided an easy migration path with minimum risk and a small learning curve. “In addition, high performance was critical as was our need for a database architecture that would enable continued growth and to help us meet our requirement for 99.9 percent uptime,” noted Varadan. ”We converted 500 application programs over a week-end and the process went very smoothly. In fact, we’re already validating our business decision and technology selection in terms of ROI,” Varadan said.
“Our success with CACHÉ means that we can move forward with negotiations with new hospitals to form additional joint ventures without worrying about our system capacity and capability,” Varadan said. “InterSystems has positioned us perfectly for continued growth without any sacrifice of quality or efficiency.”
“Virtually every healthcare CIO who is focused on improving the organizational bottom line will be interested in PAML’s ability to quantify the return on their technology investment so quickly” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “In today’s tough economic environment, measurable ROI isn’t just desirable—it’s essential to IT success.”
