Cambridge, MA – April 10, 2000 – Spotlighting the latest e-Business innovations in healthcare, InterSystems Corporation today announced that Partners HealthCare System, Inc. is providing physicians with secure access to Web applications via corporate portals based on the high performance Caché e-DBMS. Details on the new Web implementation were provided by InterSystems this week at the HIMSS 2000 Conference and Exposition in Dallas.

InterSystems is the database software leader in the healthcare sector. Their database technology is now in use by all of the top 10 hospitals rated America’s best, according to the latest survey by U.S. News and World Report.

Extending Application Reach Via the Web

The physician Web portals are key components of an information strategy based on extending application reach throughout an integrated healthcare delivery network that is one of the largest in the Northeast. Based in Boston, Partners HealthCare is an integrated healthcare network including multiple major hospitals and more than 4,000 physicians. Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Faulkner Hospital, McLeans Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and North Shore Medical Center are among the major institutions comprising Partners HealthCare. Caché database software is being used throughout the Partners HealthCare network in clinical and administrative applications where performance and scalability are success factors.

“Our strategy is to provide primary care physicians throughout our healthcare delivery network with fast, convenient access to the information resources needed to ensure optimal care delivery,” says John Glaser, Partners HealthCare vice president and CIO. “Caché is uniquely capable of enabling the rapid, reliable response needed for critical information delivery on a 24X7 basis as well as the scalability that is key for a healthcare network that is in fast growth mode.”

The physician Web portals, which are designed to offer approximately 1,000 primary care physicians in the Boston area easy access to multiple applications, began going live throughout the Partners HealthCare network on a pilot basis early this year. Partners HealthCare is currently planning to provide a variety of portal packages that will enable clinical application management, support administrative processes, and provide physicians with relevant payor and contract information required in a managed care environment. Based on positive response from early system users, implementation will continue on an aggressive rollout schedule throughout 2000.

“Partners HealthCare is recognized throughout the healthcare industry as a leader in leveraging the best that information technology can offer,” says Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems vice president of strategic planning. “The physician portals initiative is the latest evidence of their success at implementing a strategy that makes them leaders in healthcare e-Business.”
