EaReturn on Web-Based Technology Investment Clearly Demonstrated; Clinical Improvements Cited
Cambridge, MA—January 28, 2002—At the HIMSS 2002 Conference in Atlanta, InterSystems Corporation today highlighted the success that Memorial Medical Center (MMC) in Ashland, Wisc., has achieved in reducing its account receivable wait time from 80 to 58 days using the web-based QuadraMed Affinity® Patient Accounting application built on InterSystems’ CACHÉ, the leading database in healthcare.
MMC implemented a web-based technology strategy because it is an acute care medical referral center for patients from eight counties. “With our widely spread patient base, we need clinical and financial applications that fully leverage the Web to help us deliver top-tier care,” said MMC CIO Todd Reynolds.
ROI on Multiple Fronts
Over a two-year period, the payback on MMC’s investment in the CACHÉ-based QuadraMed Affinity Health Information System has been impressive from both clinical and financial perspectives. “Since rolling out the Affinity Patient Accounting applications, we’ve been able to cut accounts receivable (A/R) wait time from 80 to about 58 days—more than 30% on average,” said MMC chief financial officer Les Whiteaker. “With A/R averaging about $9M, that decrease translates to substantially improved cash flow—and that means we can better focus on care delivery.” Whiteaker noted that the success of the hospital’s IT strategy had made it is easier for MMC to make its recent acquisition of a state-of-the-art MRI machine.
MMC has identified other technology-based efficiencies, particularly in reduced physician time on administrative matters, elimination of redundant lab tests, and faster and better information for decision-making. “Easy access to Web-based information has clearly resulted in improvements in overall care delivery,” Whiteaker said.
QuadraMed Affinity’s reliability, scalability and high performance on the CACHÉ database system have significantly contributed to the return on MMC’s technology investment. “Our technical staff is very small in proportion to the size and complexity of the systems we’re running today,” said CIO Reynolds. “That not only highlights the manageability of Affinity and CACHÉ but also lays the groundwork for future expansion with an infrastructure we’re confident can easily scale upwards to meet new requirements.”
MMC’s strategy is indicative of a definite trend among healthcare organizations to proactively leverage Web technologies. InterSystems vice president of strategic planning Paul Grabscheid stated, “InterSystems and QuadraMed are partnering to ensure that IT executives in healthcare institutions can fully exploit the potential of the Web for delivering healthcare to patient populations in virtually any location.”
