Double digit growth combined with increase in staff numbers shows success of post relational database technology

Eton, UK – June 20, 2002 – InterSystems, specialist in Rapid Application Development (RAD) and provider of CACHÉ high performance database technology, has announced a good news story in the midst of the continuing uneasy market. Against a backdrop of the InterSystems Corporation growing 17 per cent last year, the Berkshire-based UK office has doubled its sales-force, signalling an enhanced focus on developing broader markets and further strengthening its partner network.

“InterSystems is defying the gravity of the IT market at the moment – by showing double digit growth when the biggest DBMS vendors are showing only small single digit or large negative growth,” says UK country manager, Graham Frost. He adds that InterSystems Corporation is aiming for 20 – 30 per cent growth this current year.

CACHÉ is the development environment and database of choice in the healthcare market where reliability and mission criticality is essential. The increased sales force – eight new, highly-experienced professionals have joined the UK team in the first half of this year – will be focused on other markets such as telecommunications, financial services, retail and public sector.

Frost puts this reverse market trend down to the advanced nature of CACHÉ database technology. Described as “post relational” and optimised for the tough demands of Web applications, its Rapid Application Development environment with advanced object technology lets users operate at the ultra-fast speeds needed for the Internet.

“Relational database systems are at the end of their growth slope,” he continues. “The only people buying are those already committed or those who don’t know the alternatives.”

He reports that of those downloading a free trial version of CACHÉ from the Internet (at, 33 per cent are Microsoft SQL users, 27 per cent Oracle, 7 per cent Sybase, 7 per cent DB2 and 5 per cent Informix. The reasons stated for wanting to change are: no web services, no objects, poor performance, no rapid application development tools, inability to scale and poor support.

“CACHÉ is the only Web development environment to combine easy and rapid creation of sophisticated e-applications with the massive scalability and lightning-fast performance of a post relational database – and this is why we have found it necessary to invest substantially in growing our sales force,” he says.

Why CACHÉ is Winning

“The more informed development strategists see the value of undertakingnew developments using the latest object-oriented RAD tools such as CACHÉ.They are fed up with squeezing complex data into two-dimensional tables thenhaving to do SQL somersaults to get information back out again,” explainsFrost.

Such relational systems become overly complex and the penalty is poor performance. By contrast CACHÉ allows the developer to build object models which directly reflect the complex data and then put it into a multidimensional data engine which is specifically designed for object use. Such a system requires dramatically less database administration providing even more cost savings to the end users.

Where CACHÉ scores over other RAD suppliers is in its ability to scale up to massive transaction throughput without any changes to the application. It is also able to coexist in a relational world and allow users to see their object data through SQL glasses. Furthermore, it can combine the roles of data server, application server and web server.

“In many market sectors such as telcos and financial services, there is an acute need to develop new applications and deploy them before the competitor even thinks about the idea – and our RAD tools are designed to do just this,” concludes Frost.
