Cambridge, Mass.—October 18 , 2007— InterSystems Corporation today announced that the Group Health healthcare system has completed rolling out the Progeny Anatomic Pathology (AP) information system from PathView Systems, Ltd., an InterSystems application partner. The breakthrough implementation, which has already delivered significant error reduction and a dramatic increase in workflow efficiency, is built on the InterSystems CACHÉ® high-performance object database. With 1,000 physicians serving more than a half million members in Washington and Idaho, Group Health is a nonprofit healthcare system that provides both medical coverage and care.
InterSystems is a leading provider of innovative database and integration software. Its product line includes the InterSystems CACHÉ high-performance object database, InterSystems Ensemble® rapid integration platform, and InterSystems HealthShare™ platform for regional and national electronic health records. Anna, Texas-based PathView develops and markets information systems solutions and services, specializing in anatomic and clinical pathology healthcare applications.
Focus on Innovation Results in New AP Implementation
“Healthcare is a changing industry and Group Health is taking a leading edge approach in multiple areas,” said Dave Eide, Senior Projects Director at Group Health. One example was the decision to migrate AP automation from a legacy, paperbound system to the Progeny AP application.
“We wanted to deliver the highest quality AP results to providers and patients,” Eide continued. “The richness and completeness of the information delivered via Progeny AP was a major factor in our application software selection. This product is new from the ground up, with the advanced, state-of-the-art capabilities needed in today’s competitive healthcare arena.”
The fact that Progeny AP runs on the InterSystems CACHÉ database was another driver behind Group Health’s product choice. “We’ve been using EpicCare clinical software from Epic Systems for years,” Eide said. “Since the Epic application utilizes CACHÉ and it has a highly successful track record, our technical specialists had complete confidence in the database technology.”
The migration from the legacy application to CACHÉ-based Progeny AP was completed on an aggressive schedule. “We got very high scores on the implementation timeline and it was done with absolutely no loss of data in the transition,” noted Eide. “And, based on the analysis that we use to measure workflow, there have been significant efficiency improvements,” he said. “The automated bar-coding provided by the new system, for example, virtually eliminates paper shuffling as well as transcription errors that occurred in the previous environment. Our users are very satisfied and would absolutely refuse to give up the automated, integrated bar-coding.” And, the dramatic reduction in transcription errors contributes to improved patient safety—a major focus for Group Health, noted Eide.
The new system also positions Group Health for future expansion, according to Eide. “We handle hundreds of cases on a daily basis, which was pushing the limits for the legacy application. Now, we can consider doing some new outreach work to bring new members into our network because we have increased capability due to Progeny AP,” he said.
“Like Group Health, we’re committed to ongoing innovation in the products we deliver to our customer base,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “It’s a real pleasure to work with our application partner PathView as they bring a major new AP product offering to the healthcare technology market.”
