Fast, Easy HL7 Interface Development Critical to IT Strategy
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—November 10, 2010— InterSystems Corporation, the global leader in software for connected healthcare, today announced that Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) has chosen the InterSystems Ensemble® integration and development platform for enterprise-wide integration.
InterSystems specializes in advanced integration, database, and business intelligence technologies for breakthrough applications. YRMC is a 333-bed, not-for-profit hospital dedicated to providing outstanding medical care to the residents of Yuma and the surrounding communities in southwestern Arizona.
Fast In-House Development Depends on Easy-to-Use Graphical Platform
“We looked at a variety of integration platforms from multiple perspectives,” said Fred Peet, Director of Information Technology at YRMC. “Based on our research, the skillset for developing HL7 interfaces in-house is very important to ensuring the success of any large electronic health record (EHR) system,” he explained. “And, we felt we’d have more success in the long run with a platform that is easy to learn and offers a graphical environment.
“In addition, we needed a platform that works smoothly with the EHR system that we licensed from Epic Systems,” Peet continued. “The Epic EHR application is built on the InterSystems CACHÉ® high-performance database and we spoke with several IT organizations about their use of Ensemble with Epic. We determined that there is a good, seamless fit between these systems and selected Ensemble as our core integration platform in 2Q10.”
YRMC will be using Ensemble to replace more than 40 system interfaces built on a legacy integration platform and plans call for adding a significant number of new interfaces as the Epic system is rolled out. “For example, we plan to interface biomedical devices into the EHR,” Peet noted.
While it’s too soon in the rollout process to identify quantifiable benefits from the Ensemble implementation, Peet expects to reap savings of both time and money by bringing interface development in-house. “Ensemble also makes rapid cycle testing possible and provides our IT staff with the ability to respond more rapidly to business requests, resulting in improved patient safety and quality care delivery,” he said.
“The fast interface development, rapid cycle testing and rapid response to end-users that Ensemble will deliver at YRMC illustrate the enterprise-wide breakthroughs enabled by InterSystems’ advanced technologies,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “We’re looking forward to working with YRMC as they leverage Ensemble’s capabilities to the fullest extent possible.”
