CACHÉ Technology Chosen to Power System

Eton, UK—June 3, 2003—CACHÉ post-relational database technology from InterSystems has been chosen to power a redeveloped NHS Breast Screening Programme system as part of a contract awarded to Wealth Management Software plc (WMS). The redevelopment will help to improve efficiency within the NHS Breast Screening Programme as it expands to meet targets set out in the NHS Cancer Plan.

CACHÉ was chosen because of its proven track record for both resilience and scalability in high-volume applications. Its rapid application development capabilities will play a key role in meeting the rigorous time scale goals the project demands.

Efficiencies will be achieved by replacing the current character-based system with a Windows client/server system running on both a Unix and Windows 2000 platforms. As the WMS project manager explains: “Such an important project needs robust, high performance database technology which is totally dependable. Also, with over 60 sites and an average of 10 users at each site, we need a system which can easily cope with the volume.

Says Graham Frost, InterSystems Managing Director: “We are delighted to be working with WMS on such an important project and know that the strengths of CACHÉ will not only help the speed of development of the application, but also ensure fast access to data for end users. Our customers report that their applications run up to 20 times faster once they are ported to CACHÉ and we have even demonstrated up to 8,000 user level of scalability in benchmarks so we are confident we can support this implementation.”

CACHÉ is called post-relational to distinguish it from old-fashioned relational databases that force data into simplistic 2D models. It comprises of a robust object database with high performance SQL and it stores the data in a multidimensional structure, ideal for managing complex data and with much faster access.
