Intuitive Design, Advanced System Management Key Differentiators During Intensive Competitive Assessment

Cambridge, Mass.—November 15, 2006—InterSystems Corporation today announced that the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) has chosen Ensemble as the health care integration engine for the entire enterprise.

The leading database provider in health care, InterSystems develops and markets the CACHÉ post-relational database, Ensemble rapid integration software and HealthShare health information exchange platform. UMMS is an academic health care system serving Baltimore and the mid-Atlantic region. The hospitals that comprise UMMS include: University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Maryland General Hospital, The James Lawrence Kernan Hospital, University Specialty Hospital, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, Memorial Hospital at Easton and Dorchester General Hospital.

Ensemble is targeted to replace integration software currently used in existing systems and is to be the foundation technology for future integration initiatives throughout UMMS facilities, according to Jon Burns, Senior VP and Chief Information Officer for UMMS. “Our goal is to build an enterprise-wide integrated clinical information technology architecture that effectively enables and supports UMMS educational, clinical and business goals,” Burns said.

Ensemble Choice Based on In-Depth Competitive Evaluation

Ensemble was selected after an extensive evaluation of integration software products that are placed in the top tier by KLAS, a health care research firm known industry-wide for independent reporting on vendor performance. Over five days, UMMS technologists provided vendors with creative challenges such as building solutions on the fly for newly specified problems. The process included on-site installation, running through real-world scenarios and competitive scoring of features such as business process orchestration, data transformation, rules processing, message handling, load testing, high availability and user interface. “Ensemble offers a highly intuitive, visual design that addresses the development and management requirements of an enterprise-scale integration infrastructure,” Mark DeVault, Director, Clinical Information Systems, said. “And, it’s an inclusive product that is to provide not only the technical components we need right now but also facilities that are critical to the success of our long-term IT strategy.”

Initially, Ensemble will integrate a wide range of systems and data repositories with new healthcare applications from Epic Systems Corporation. “Ensemble will be used across our entire medical system to support the Epic implementation and for all new interface development work,” according to Janet McKercher, Sr. Project Manager, Application Integration. “We’ve established a working partnership with InterSystems to enable our enterprise vision now and in the future.”

“UMMS is known throughout health care for its commitment to delivering quality care and its creative use of technology to support that commitment,” said Trevor Matz, InterSystems Managing Director, Application Integration. “We are pleased and proud to have the opportunity to work with UMMS as they transform their innovative vision into technology reality.”
