Benchmarking shows Caché approximately 300 per cent faster ‘It can help our business grow even more rapidly’ says Cogent
Eton, UK – November, 2001 – Caché, the post relational database from InterSystems, has shown it can improve the speed of running month end financial processes by 300 per cent.
In benchmarking carried out by Cogent Investment Operations, the specialist fund administrator, the month-end run with Caché took only one hour and ten minutes compared with three hours running on a legacy ISM database.
Cogent is a leading player in PEP and ISA administration, administering ISAs for more than 38 per cent of all investment trusts quoted on the London Stock Exchange. Its primary purpose in carrying out the benchmarking was to evaluate its hardware and the operating system. “While we were doing that, we decided to trial Caché to see if the claims InterSystems was making could be verified,” explained Chris Casey, Cogent head of technical architecture.
“Our regular capacity reviews highlighted that we could have a potential bottleneck with our month-end processing if we didn’t expand our hardware capacity. Our approach to the benchmarking was to take our worse-case scenario and run that against different hardware and software configurations.”
The trial, which was carried out at the Compaq benchmarking suite in Birmingham, showed that the best times were achieved when Cogent’s investment management application was run on Caché on an Alpha system.
Casey said he was impressed by the result – and when put into practise with Cogent’s clients will reinforce the company’s continuing success in the fund administration market. “As a company our systems are doubling in size every 18 months – this will really give us a strong capability for potential future growth,” he said.
Caché’s multidimensional engine means that data does not have to be normalized as it does in traditional relational systems. This provides a significant boost in the speed of transaction processing, benefiting not just financial systems but any application that does more than simple reporting. Recently released Caché 4 has added terabyte support and in-memory databases for unparalleled DBMS performance.
Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., InterSystems Corporation (www.InterSystems.com) is the leading provider of high-performance database management systems, with over four million users worldwide.
