Currentcare, a Service of the Rhode Island Quality Institute,Will Enable Statewide Patient Data Flow

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— September 6, 2011— InterSystems Corporation, a global leader in software for connected care, today announced that currentcare®, Rhode Island’s statewide health information exchange (HIE) and a service of the Rhode Island Quality Institute (RIQI), has initiated project rollout. Patient data from East Side Clinical Laboratory is now flowing into currentcare, which uses InterSystems HealthShare strategic informatics platform technology for HIE.

“East Side Clinical Laboratory is the first data-sharing partner in a statewide HIE project that will involve connecting hundreds of clinical practices. These organizations will be sharing critical health care data in real time  via currentcare in order to provide the best possible care,” said Gary Christensen, CIO and COO of RIQI, the sole regional health information organization for Rhode Island.

More than 165,000 Rhode Island residents are currently enrolled in the currentcare HIE. Diagnostic results of East Side Clinical Laboratory enrolled patients are now being sent directly to currentcare.

RIQI’s HealthShare-based rollout approach involves implementing a scalable interoperability model. “We’re taking a horizontal approach that involves connecting all the labs in the state to currentcare and, as a result, having all of the lab results for patients in Rhode Island who have given their consent available to clinical stakeholders,” Christensen said.

Strategic Informatics, Working Partnership Key to HIE Success

InterSystems HealthShare is a breakthrough software solution that goes beyond basic HIE and interoperability requirements to enable sharing enriched information, performing integrated analytics and building engaged online communities.  “HealthShare makes it possible to  seamlessly connect with virtually any technology. As a result, we’ll be able to take advantage of new products that provide new capabilities as they become available,” Christensen said.

“InterSystems’ approach to working with us as partners has been another important differentiator,” Christensen stated. “They’ve been very flexible in dealing with the complications inherent to federally funded programs and they provide the service experience and knowledge needed to make the HIE work well.”

HealthShare connects readily to internal and external systems and offers a seamlessly integrated, universal view of all of the data available in an HIE. And, it provides the software services needed to drive HIEs, hospitals, and integrated delivery networks (IDNs) toward optimized clinical and organizational results. As a result, RIQI is well positioned to move ahead rapidly with development plans. “We plan to add the ability to notify patient-centered medical homes that a patient is leaving a hospital by detecting a discharge event and sending a note to the home. Initiatives such as this one are well beyond vanilla HIE. Also, we’re working with InterSystems on a number of innovations that will combine multiple technology products…InterSystems is a great innovation partner,” Christensen noted.

“It’s exciting to work with RIQI as they kick off the currentcare deployment and rapidly add new capabilities to the statewide HIE,” said Dominick Bizzarro, InterSystems HealthShare Business Manager. “We appreciate the opportunity to continue this highly successful partnership and to provide the technology essential to enabling optimal care delivery to the Rhode Island patient population.”
