CAMBRIDGE, Mass—November 15, 2011— InterSystems Corporation, a global leader in software for connected care, today announced that Pronger Smith Medical Care™ rolled out InterSystems Ensemble® as its core enterprise integration platform. The strategic decision to build application interfaces with in-house staff on the easy-to-use Ensemble platform has already generated tens of thousands dollars in cost savings over any other development approach, according to Craig Cypress, Network System Manager at Pronger Smith.
“Now that we’ve been trained and have experience working with Ensemble, it sometimes requires less than 10 minutes to build an interface…maybe an hour if the interface is complex,” Cypress stated. “The money we’ve saved by not having to bring new people in to create interfaces between our applications and other systems has already grown to tens of thousands of dollars,” he estimated.
Opportunity to Join Regional Health Information Exchange Led to Integration Initiative
The desire to join a regional health information exchange (HIE) using a Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) electronic health record (EHR) format drove Pronger Smith’s decision to implement enterprise-scale integration, according to CFO Bill Flamm. “We feel strongly that sharing information across the HIE results in improved care quality,” he said. “Joining the HIE breaks us out of our standalone silo and helps ensure that physicians have the complete range of patient data needed to reduce the potential for error and to enable optimal care delivery.”
Flamm also pointed out that Pronger Smith has financial responsibility for over 10,000 capitated lives. “By sharing information, we can eliminate duplicate treatments, leading to significant measurable savings,” he said. In addition, data sharing helps fulfill meaningful use criteria, which is a key component of Pronger Smith’s business strategy.
Easy to Learn, Easy to Use
An integration engine was a prerequisite for extracting HL7 messages from Pronger Smith’s legacy EHR system for delivery to the HIE medical record. After evaluating several products, Ensemble emerged as the clear winner, according to Cypress. “We were coming into this initiative with no Ensemble experience. The initial proof-of-concept project provided good insight in what we had to learn. And, after only two weeks, our two-person team was able to build and implement application interfaces on a production basis,” he said.
After a successful rollout this year of Ensemble interfaces that provide connectivity between Pronger Smith’s legacy EHR and the regional HIE, the organization is perfectly positioned to move forward with additional integration projects. “There is ongoing emphasis on being able to share information and smoothly integrate health care systems,” Flamm said. “Meaningful Use and the establishment of Accountable Care Organizations, for example, are based on the ability to share information among multiple organizations. We’ve implemented Ensemble across the enterprise and, whenever the question comes up about whether we can provide the interfaces between our systems and other products and applications, Ensemble gives us the ability to answer ‘yes’. Combining our cost savings with the capabilities provided by Ensemble puts us in a very good place,” Flamm concluded.
“Health care organizations of any size—from huge IDNs through community hospitals, clinics and physician practices—can quickly leverage Ensemble’s comprehensive feature set,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “As a result, they are well positioned for the information sharing that is essential for cost-effective delivery of the highest quality care.”
