Cambridge, MA – February 5, 2001- Spotlighting the latest e-Business innovations in healthcare, InterSystems Corporation today announced that Partners HealthCare System, Inc. is providing physicians with secure, wireless access to Web applications based on the high performance CACHÉ post-relational database. Details on the new Web implementation were provided by InterSystems this week at the HIMSS 2001 Conference and Exposition in New Orleans.
InterSystems is the database software leader in the healthcare sector. Its database technology is now in use by all of the top 10 hospitals rated America’s best, according to the latest survey by U.S. News and World Report.
Extending Application Reach Via the Web
The wireless Web project keynotes an information strategy based on extending application reach throughout an integrated healthcare delivery network that is one of the largest in the Northeast. Partners HealthCare System includes Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Northshore Medical Center, Faulkner Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, McLean Hospital and an oncology joint venture with Dana Farber Cancer Institute. CACHÉ is used in many clinical applications at Partners HealthCare, particularly those that require high performance and scalability.
“Our strategy is to provide primary care physicians throughout our healthcare delivery network with secure, fast, convenient access to the information resources needed to ensure optimal care delivery,” says John Glaser, Partners HealthCare CIO. “CACHÉ is uniquely capable of enabling the fast, reliable response needed for delivering critical information on a 7X24 basis, as well as the scalability that is key for a healthcare network that is in fast growth mode.”
Currently, physicians can use PDAs to access multiple CACHÉ-based Web systems including a directory that provides access to 40,000-plus people anywhere in the Partners HealthCare organization and an automated viewer that shows a patient’s latest test results. Physicians also have the capability to write prescriptions that are automatically filed on the patient’s record and, in some cases, transferred directly to the pharmacy.
Based on an “extremely positive” response from early system users, wireless Web information access will continue implementation on an aggressive rollout schedule throughout 2001. Next on the agenda is a medication administration record system in which a PDA will scan barcodes on medications to assist in drug administration.
“Partners HealthCare is recognized throughout the healthcare industry as a leader in creative utilization of the best that information technology can offer,” says Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems vice president of strategic planning.
