CACHÉ Post-Relational Database Delivers Performance, Scalability, Reliability Key to Regional Expansion
Cambridge, Mass.—February 10, 2003—InterSystems Corporation today announced that Omega Medical Laboratories began implementation in early 2003 of CACHÉ-based Misys Commercial Laboratory™ and Misys Clinical Financial™ applications from Misys Healthcare Systems. The implementation, which is scheduled to go live in March, was highlighted this week at the HIMSS 2003 conference in San Diego.
Based in Wyomissing, Pa., Omega has become the regional leader in outpatient laboratory medicine, serving physicians and their patients, nursing homes and commercial organizations. Omega testing services help physicians to diagnose illness and monitor treatment. Omega also provides programs to identify potential health problems, combat substance abuse and promote wellness to individuals and business.
“Our legacy information systems were becoming overburdened by growing volumes of data,” says CIO Tony Douventzidis, and “our growth was projected to dramatically increase performance and scalability requirements. Additionally, we’d been using our own internal PC-based application development tools,” he continues. “To accommodate our growth we needed an advanced technology platform with powerful development tools. We were very pleased when Misys informed us that the Misys applications we use were now available on CACHÉ.”
“We’ve been partnering with InterSystems to deliver robust, scalable healthcare IT applications with rich functionality to over 1,200 sites,” said Andrew Lawson, Chief Operating Officer, Misys Healthcare Systems, Hospital Systems business unit. “Our partnership with InterSystems and with Omega Medical Laboratories is another excellent example of successful integration of our suite of clinical information systems products with InterSystems’ high performance, scalable CACHÉ database technology.”
The CACHÉ-based Misys Commercial Laboratory and Misys Clinical Financial systems are being implemented on a network that serves more than 170 information users in multiple locations. In addition to those accessing the systems for laboratory and financial information, the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Alpha 4100 server supports electronic lab ordering from more than 40 remote locations.
Reliability is the Bottom Line
While database performance and scalability were major factors in Omega’s technology selection, Douventzidis stresses that stability and reliability are equally critical. “At the end of the day, Omega is all about treating our patients. We serve 2,500 patients on average daily. We’ve examined other solutions involving relational technology, and we’ve looked at other development tools. The bottom line is that we can count on CACHÉ.”
Future plans at Omega include continued expansion, implementing Web-based ordering and a responsible evolution of technology that best serves our patients and clients. “We’re comfortable that CACHÉ can handle up to 18,000 patients a day on our existing hardware/software without any degradation in response time. That provides us with a wide margin for expansion,” Douventzidis says.
“The lab testing industry is experiencing substantial growth,” notes Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems vice president of strategic planning. “InterSystems is focused on enabling innovators like Omega to achieve their business objectives in this increasingly challenging and competitive industry sector.”
