CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— February 21, 2012— InterSystems Corporation, a global leader in software for connected care, announced today that MemorialCare Health System has selected InterSystems HealthShare as its strategic informatics platform.  This latest example of InterSystems’ commitment to enabling health information sharing by integrated delivery networks (IDNs) was announced during the HIMSS12 Annual Conference and Exhibition.

MemorialCare is a not-for-profit IDN that includes six hospitals and a medical foundation in Southern California.  It has consistently been recognized for its unique approach to healthcare delivery and innovative use of healthcare technology.  MemorialCare is listed among the top twenty percent of health systems nationwide by Thomson Reuters.  It has also been identified eight times as one of the Most Wired Hospitals by Hospitals & Health Networks.

Building the Network

For several years, integration of physician practices has been a strategic focus at MemorialCare.  The health system has implemented the Epic electronic health record (EHR), which is built on the InterSystems CACHÉ high-performance database system, according to Sr. Vice President and CIO, Scott Joslyn.  “As we integrated more practices, it became clear that providing bidirectional connectivity between our Epic system and the EHRs already running in these physician practices was an essential, practical, and cost-effective integration option alongside offering the Epic ambulatory system,” he said.

“At the same time and as an initial step,” Joslyn noted, “we wanted to replace our legacy interface engine with a new platform that provided more comprehensive functionality and the basis for providing an unmatched spectrum of integration, storage, and analytical options across a growing care continuum.  Finally,” he continued, “whether physician practices are either owned or simply affiliated with MemorialCare, we have the additional capability to connect with state, regional and national HIEs as they continue to grow and evolve.”

InterSystems HealthShare is a strategic healthcare informatics platform.  It enables sharing  of patient information across multiple systems, and active analytics to drive informed action.  “HealthShare’s wide range of capabilities is offered on a technology platform that makes communication with physician practices of any size consistent and manageable,” Joslyn said. “Physicians can, for example, easily refer patients to MemorialCare, provide us with critical patient information and take full advantage of the services that we offer.  Via HealthShare, these affiliated physicians can receive documents such as discharge summaries and referral notices, to name just a few common transactions.  And, HealthShare includes a clinical viewer that provides intuitive access to virtually any clinical data through a browser interface that can be easily rolled out, even in one-person practices.”

MemorialCare is completing phase one of its interdepartmental integration initiative. “As we finalize this first phase, we are preparing to begin phase two,” Joslyn said.  Future plans call for examining advanced HealthShare features such as the embedded iKnow technology that makes it possible to analyze previously inaccessible unstructured data.

“MemorialCare is among those IDNs that are leading the way in enabling the intelligent clinical data exchange that is essential to optimal care delivery,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning.  “We appreciate the opportunity to provide them with advanced technology that enables success with current ‘connected care’ projects and positions them to achieve future healthcare delivery objectives.”
