Kennys Bookshop to Use Vubis Smart to Manage its Catalogues and Promote its Range over the Web
Eton, UK—June 24, 2003—Bringing major enhancements to its cataloguing and online sales functionality, Kennys Bookshop and Galleries, one of Ireland’s premier book suppliers, has implemented Vubis Smart, the latest Library and Information Management System from Geac.
Based on InterSystems’ post-relational database CACHÉ, Vubis Smart will allow Kennys to catalogue its one million stock items to library standards. In addition, it will provide powerful web retrieval functionality to enable the company to meet the requirements of its worldwide customer base.
Using the new system, books will become available on Kennys website as they are catalogued. In addition, Vubis Smart will support comprehensive web searches not just on title and author but also on descriptive information, contents and even the condition of books – a key benefit for book collectors and academic customers in particular.
“We are confident that, as a key component of Vubis Smart, the rich functionality of the CACHÉ database will bring a myriad of benefits to our business,” says David Lohan, IT manager, Kennys Bookshop and Galleries.
“Because it is difficult to sell uncatalogued stock, one of our key objectives with the new solution was to use it to increase our cataloguing rate,” adds Lohan. “The major benefit CACHÉ provides us in this respect is its rapid transactional processing.”
“Using our old system, we were cataloguing between 2,500 and 3,000 books a week. We believe the operational speed of CACHÉ will help to approximately double this figure to 5,000 a week.”
Lohan says that another key driver for the project was to sell more product via the web. “The Internet is of vital and growing importance to our business, effectively providing us with a ‘virtual’ extension of our retail space,” he comments.
“CACHÉ’s ability to process large volumes of data rapidly makes it well suited to this environment. Using the CACHÉ Server Pages function within Vubis Smart enables us to quickly and efficiently map information onto the Web.”
The Vubis Smart implementation at Kennys also benefits from the ‘massive’ scalability of the CACHÉ database. As CACHÉ is more compact than typical relational databases, it makes more efficient use of disk space and, therefore, allows more room for growth.
“This scalability will enable us to more efficiently manage the ongoing development of our business and ease the process of developing new customer services in the future,” continues Lohan.
Vubis Smart is part of a combined solution at Kennys which also includes Streamline, Geac’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) suite of applications. Together, the systems form an integrated set of enterprise-wide applications to manage all aspects of Kennys’ business.
