New Platform Key Component of Healthcare Database Leader’s Wireless Strategy
Cambridge, Mass.—February 10, 2003—InterSystems Corporation today introduced its CACHÉ post-relational database for the Tablet PC.
InterSystems develops and markets CACHÉ, the leading database in the healthcare sector. The technology foundation for thousands of applications running in healthcare networks nationwide, CACHÉ is used by the majority of US hospitals and leading healthcare systems providers.
“We’ve been providing low-maintenance, high performance database technology to the healthcare sector since InterSystems was founded in 1978,” says Paul Grabscheid, vice president of strategic planning. “With 25 years of industry knowledge and ongoing partnerships with major healthcare technology companies, InterSystems is well positioned to spot emerging trends. We’re seeing increasing adoption of wireless applications in our healthcare customer base,” he notes.
Leading Edge Wireless Strategy
Responding to customer interest, InterSystems has focused on making CACHÉ available on platforms that are especially attractive in the healthcare sector. “The Tablet PC is a wonderful fit for healthcare environments,” Grabscheid says. “Its design makes it easy to transition through different working environments quickly and discreetly. Users can take handwritten notes and annotate documents in an intuitive, natural way while still having access to the performance they’re looking for in a mobile PC.”
Distributing medications on the hospital floor is one example of a scenario that could improve immediately with the addition of CACHÉ-based applications running on the Tablet PC, according to Grabscheid. “Today, most nurses distribute patient medications with the ability to enter notes and medical records limited to a fixed computer on the medication cart. Instead, we envisage a situation where the nurse scans the patient’s bracelet to bring up the appropriate record and can enter observations immediately in their natural handwriting. It’s an approach that’s much less obtrusive and decreases the chance of anything being forgotten since the notes can be entered at the patient’s bedside.”
The combination of CACHÉ and the Tablet PC is naturally synergistic in healthcare settings, Grabscheid continues. “CACHÉ is optimized to deliver the high performance, fast response and reliability crucial in the 24 x 7 healthcare environment. With a notebook-sized screen, the Tablet PC eliminates the problem of cumbersome data entry that makes most handhelds unattractive for healthcare professionals. Since existing CACHÉ-based applications can be run on the Tablet PC platform, without changing a line of code, providing information access and transaction processing via the new devices will be a smooth process.”
Real-time wireless database access is provided by the CACHÉ Enterprise Cache Protocol (ECP), which uses unique distributed cache technology to deliver high performance even for data-intensive applications. Additionally, the recoverability mechanisms built into CACHÉ ECP add to the attractiveness of the solution in reliability-conscious healthcare organizations.
Available now, CACHÉ is priced at US$200 in a single-user version and starting at US$1,000 for a multi-user configuration. Supported platforms include Windows (Windows 95 upwards), Linux, HP Open VMS, and major UNIX platforms including IBM AIX, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, Tru64 UNIX and Sun Solaris.
Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., InterSystems Corporation (www.InterSystems.com) is a leading provider of low-maintenance, high performance database systems for Web applications, with over four million users worldwide.
