InterSystems Partners with Healthcare Technology Leaders To Demo Health Information Sharing Among Virtual Communities

CHICAGO—April 6, 2009—Demonstrating its commitment to the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) consortium, InterSystems Corporation today announced its participation in the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase. The InterSystems HealthShare software platform will be hosted in one of five virtual communities where information sharing will be demonstrated at the HIMSS 2009 annual conference and exhibition.

The global leader in software for connected healthcare, InterSystems develops and markets innovative integration, database and business intelligence products. HealthShare is used worldwide to enable the fastest creation of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) for regional and national health information exchange platforms.

HealthShare provides an extensible framework through which regional and national EHRs can be dynamically assembled. It not only enables aggregation and sharing of consented clinical and administrative data across multiple provider organizations, but also provides a network through which ePrescribing, referrals, consultations, public health notifications, and other messages can be delivered.

The Interoperability Showcase highlights IHE’s common framework for delivering interoperability across local, regional, and national health information exchanges. It features technology and standards in an interactive environment using clinical scenarios that simulate how health information is passed between care providers.

IHE promotes the coordinated use of standards such as HL7 and DICOM to address clinical needs in support of optimal patient care.  “InterSystems is committed to the IHE’s objectives which are focused on improving the ways in which computer systems in healthcare share information,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “As more Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) begin operations, the need for standardized means to connect RHIOs becomes vital.  We appreciate the opportunity afforded by the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase to illustrate how InterSystems technologies are being used to enable standardized, effective communication among varying healthcare technology infrastructures.”

Information Sharing at Work

The Interoperability Showcase will include vendors supporting five virtual communities simulating healthcare entities that will share information both within each local community and with other communities. InterSystems will provide the Cross Community Access (XCA) Initiating and Responding Gateways in two of the five communities that enable sharing data, both locally and with the other three remote virtual communities. InterSystems HealthShare will be hosted in this community with Microsoft and GE Healthcare alternately serving as Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing version b (XDSb) Registry and Repository actors.

A number of vendors will function as XDSb consumers that query and receive documents from the five connected communities through HealthShare’s Initiating Gateway.  At the same time, HealthShare’s Responding Gateway will respond to inter-community requests that come from the other three virtual communities, each of which are enabled by Initiating Gateway implementations from other technology providers.

In the process of showcasing its XCA capabilities, InterSystems will be additionally demonstrating its Audit Trail and Node Authentication (ATNA) Secure Application implementation, ensuring that its use of data is audited according to the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and IHE requirements and shared securely through TLS-protected networks.

“This is a demonstration of interoperability in action, showing how standardized communication and interoperability can deliver the critical information needed by caregivers in every location,” said Grabscheid. “IHE is becoming the de facto means through which health information is exchanged. The National Health Information Network (NHIN), for example, adopted most IHE technology profiles in trial implementations. And, HITSP has shown the same level of IHE profile acceptance in its healthcare IT recommendations.”

InterSystems HealthShare is in conformance with multiple IHE integration profiles, many of which have been recognized by HITSP. “Smooth, seamless sharing of healthcare information is absolutely essential to optimal healthcare delivery,” Grabscheid said.”InterSystems will continue to actively support the IHE in its ongoing efforts to define and certify the standards that can transform sharing concepts into reality.”
