Electronic Health Record Initiative Covers Municipalities in the 6th Regional Healthcare District of Passo Fundo and Will Benefit Thousands of People by the End of 2014

SÃO PAULO, September 24, 2013 — After implementing a project for public healthcare informatics for the Government of the Federal District, which has become a model in Brazil and other countries, InterSystems, a global leader in software for connected care, has extended its Brazilian government relationships with a new implementation of InterSystems TrakCare®, an Internet-based unified healthcare information system, for an electronic health record system for the State Government of Rio Grande do Sul.

Called SIGS (Sistema Integrado de Gestão em Saúde), the implementation covers municipalities in the 6th Regional Healthcare District of Passo Fundo. By providing the municipalities with a complete information technology infrastructure, including world-class software systems and a new data center, the Government of Rio Grande do Sul plans to modernize the public healthcare network to improve services to the community. The new infrastructure provides access to clinical information stored in TrakCare via a cloud computing platform, allowing healthcare teams including physicians, community health workers, nurses and dentists to share information such as a patient’s medications.

The SIGS implementation will connect facilities across the Passo Fundo Healthcare District, including hospitals, emergency care units and laboratories. The system implementation will support standardized processes, allowing better control of services provided. A patient’s entire history will be recorded and updated in the system, from the moment they enter a healthcare unit, including details of any surgical procedures the patient has received.

For Carlos Eduardo Nogueira, InterSystems Group Director and Managing Director, Latin America, the benefits go even further: “Making patients’ clinical data available across the public healthcare network encourages the intelligent use of information for disease prevention and more accurate and well-founded diagnoses. This will help rationalize costs by drastically reducing the number of hospitalizations. The project will also reduce the number of tests, because even if a patient loses the results, a repeat is not necessary as the results are recorded in the system.”

Successfully used in several countries, InterSystems TrakCare records all of a patient’s clinical information, from registration to examinations, medications and chronic diseases. It provides medical teams with access to this information in any healthcare unit where the patient presents for treatment.  With access to a safe and up-to-date online system with details of the patient’s condition, healthcare professionals can provide a more patient-centered service.

Nogueira explains: “By eliminating paper-based patient records and replacing them with an electronic patient history, the service becomes less bureaucratic, allowing healthcare workers to bring more dignity to patients, expand services and improve the quality of care.”

The implementation of SIGS, scheduled for completion by InterSystems by the end of 2014, is expected to generate substantial cost savings for the Government of Rio Grande do Sul through the reduced use of paper-based patient records, avoiding repeat tests and improved medication management.
