InterSystems spotlight leadership as a crucial factor in the success of eHealth programs

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia.—July 6, 2011— InterSystems Corporation, announce that they are delighted that the CEO of one of their leading customers in the world is recognized with the prestigious Middle East Healthcare Industry CEO Excellence Award. Dr. Abdulaziz Al Shamekh, CEO, Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City Hospital was chosen by an experienced judging panel from nearly 40 nominations.

Organized by the Middle East Excellence Awards Institute and in its 8th Year, the Healthcare Industry CEO Excellence Award honours the accomplishments of healthcare industry leaders. Dr. Abdulaziz Al Shamekh’s innovation and leadership was recognised to have taken the Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City Hospital to new levels of service excellence and professionalism, to have improved healthcare delivery, and contributed to the growth of the industry in the region. Through Dr. Abdulaziz Al Shamekh’s guidance, the Humanitarian City Hospital was judged to have raised the standards of performance for a healthcare organization to provide, efficient, cost-effective, quality healthcare services to the community.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al Shamekh and his team are not unfamiliar with awards of recognition, having also recently won the Excellence in Patient Safety Award at Arab Health.  The Doctor’s leadership skills have been a crucial factor in the success of the eHealth programme within the hospital.  He understood that no modern hospital can run efficiently without the right IT investment and that the high failure rate for the implementation of healthcare IT projects is a world-wide phenomenon, with a number of high profile failures being well publicised.

Throughout the rigorous market review, contract negotiations, implementation, go-live and still now, he has taken the helm and steered the hospital to achieve a level of excellence for which it has become renowned.  Using InterSystems TrakCare the unified Web-based healthcare information system, the Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City Hospital’s Electronic Patient Record (ERP) helps improve the quality of care by giving healthcare professionals the latest information at every point of care.  Staff can view administrative, clinical, laboratory, pharmacy, operating theatre and billing information.

“I am delighted that such an eminent customer has won this prestigious award,” commented Michel Amous, InterSystems Country Manager, Middle East and India.  “However, I am not surprised,” continues Amous, “It is Dr Shamekh’s vision and drive to implement a world-class EPR system that has been the key element in making this project a success.  It should be remembered that approximately 25% of healthcare IT projects fail as it is not just a matter of installing another software application; it is a whole change programme that has to be driven from the top.  He is indeed an excellent CEO, and the most worthy recipient of this award.”

As part of its commitment to ensure the provision of high standards of care to patients, the City is accredited by the two internationally recognized accrediting body, the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).  However, Dr. Abdulaziz Al Shamekh reminds his team that “Quality is a journey, not a destination.”
