IS Executive Wants Modern Technology Architecture: InterSystems, Compucare Deliver
CAMBRIDGE, MA – February 22, 1999 – A comprehensive, integrated healthcare information system running at Great Plains Regional Medical Center (GPRMC) in North Platte, NE was among a series of innovative technology initiatives focused on by InterSystems Corporation this week at the HIMSS ’99 Conference and Exposition in Atlanta.
Over the past year, GPRMC has aggressively implemented multiple components of the AFFINITY® healthcare information system. Developed and marketed by Compucare, a QuadraMed company (Nasdaq: QMDC), AFFINITY is an integrated suite of clinical and financial application solutions for single and multiple hospitals of all sizes.
InterSystems’ Caché post-relational database provides the technology foundation for all of the applications in the AFFINITY product family. Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, InterSystems is the market leader in high performance database systems for transaction processing applications. All of the hospitals ranked in the top 10 in U. S. News & World Report magazine’s 1998 annual hospital survey use InterSystems database technology.
A 116-bed hospital, GPRMC serves a patient population distributed across a very large geographical landscape. “We’re focused on functioning as a regional hub, serving smaller hospitals and clinics in our area, in order to deliver the highest quality patient care,” says Information Systems Director Bonnie Buckland. “To meet that objective, we want to take advantage of the new innovations now becoming available in top-tier information technology solutions.”
Technology innovation was a critical qualifier when GPRMC was evaluating healthcare information solutions. “We wanted an integrated set of clinical applications that would run on a modern, flexible client/server architecture. We also wanted a solution that would facilitate moving to the Web when we’re ready,” Buckland says. The combination of AFFINITY and Caché, which is optimized for Web and client server transaction processing, successfully addresses those requirements.
Fast system response was equally key to the success of the AFFINITY implementation at GPRMC. “Compucare guaranteed subsecond response for average transactions,” notes Buckland. “With a solution built on the high performance Caché database, Compucare delivered on that guarantee.”
Currently, the medical center is running more than a dozen AFFINITY applications ranging from Patient Registration and Patient Accounting through Medical Records Control and Abstracting, Utilization Management, DRG/Case Mix, and Department Management.
Next on the medical center’s technology implementation agenda is installation of Compucare’s Web-based Clinician Access application. “This browser-based solution will make it easy for physicians to access a patient’s on-line chart from any location,” says Buckland. “It’s our first step to taking advantage of the Web as an enabling technology for our business strategy.”
