Eton, UK—March 13, 2003—Customers of Goodfellow Cambridge Limited are now able to access details of tens of thousands of catalogue items in five different languages online in a matter of sub-seconds, thanks to a new Web site developed by Wealth Management Software (WMS) plc and running on CACHÉ post-relational database technology from InterSystems.
Goodfellow supplies metals, polymers, ceramics and other specialist materials to meet the research, development and specialist production needs of science and industry worldwide. CACHÉ, has been shown to deliver complex data scalability, extensibility and greater programmer productivity and so is particularly suited to eCommerce and Web-based business-to-business applications such as this.
With a head office in the UK and distributors in 20 countries, Goodfellow recognised that an effective Web ordering system was an important step in speeding and streamlining the order process. However, its existing Web site had become dated and lacked current functionality.
Because of the large volume of products on offer, Goodfellow asked WMS to provide a quick and sophisticated search option and also integrate order taking, shopping basket and order tracking all in one solution.
Stephen Aldersley, Goodfellow marketing manager explains that CACHÉ was chosen for a number of reasons. Firstly, Goodfellow and WMS knew that CACHÉ Server Pages (CSP) offered a powerful and flexible environment for the rapid and cost-effective development of large-scale applications such as this Web site.
Secondly, unlike relational databases, CACHÉ focuses on complex transactions and offers real-time complex search capability. Also, as the number of Web site users continues to increase, the database needs to offer extensive scalability to meet increasing end-user demands.
“We knew that CACHÉ would work well and at the speeds needed to encourage our customers to keep using the site. They are all very busy professionals and will get easily frustrated if they have to wait when trying to access information online,” says Aldersley.
The result, he confirms, is an easy-to-use, secure and intuitive Web site which links seamlessly with order processing and other back-end systems which also run on CACHÉ.
