Leading Manufacturer of High-End Retail Fixtures Gains Real-Time Insights
Using DCCXT Warehouse XT and InterSystems Ensemble Integration Platform
Cambridge MA — September 5, 2012—InterSystems Corporation, a global provider of advanced technologies for breakthrough applications, today announced that Goebel Fixture & Environments has significantly improved inventory accuracy and increased productivity by integrating warehousing and manufacturing systems across four Minnesota locations. Goebel implemented DCCXT’s Warehouse XT system for warehouse management and product tracking, which is based on the InterSystems Ensemble® platform for rapidly integrating and developing connectable applications.
Goebel Fixture & Environments designs, manufactures, and installs store fixtures for luxury retailers. “To stay competitive in this market, we needed to reduce operational costs by automating our warehousing and distribution processes,” said Matt Field, Goebel President and CEO. As Goebel evaluated warehouse management systems, one critical requirement was the ability to interface with its existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
Goebel selected Warehouse XT because of its comprehensive product tracking functionality, including radio frequency (RF) barcode scanning technology. In addition, DCCXT, an InterSystems Application Partner, was committed to delivering smooth integration with the in-house manufacturing system by using Ensemble.
“We now have real-time communication between systems, and the resulting access to live data provides a higher level of inventory accuracy and employee productivity than ever before,” Field said. “The system gives us the location of every item in every warehouse, right down to the bin location, and the items are verified by a barcode scan. That significantly reduces picking times and nearly eliminates errors.”
“We were confident we could seamlessly integrate with the manufacturing system by using the Ensemble platform, which comes with ready-made adapters for connecting a wide variety of technologies,” said Nick Carter, President of DCCXT. “We have had a long and successful working partnership with InterSystems, and we know we can depend on them for even the most complex projects.”
Wide-Ranging, Measurable Benefits
Warehouse XT was deployed and integrated in five phases. The first two, receiving and shop picking, were completed in only three months. The next phases were cycle counting, assembly, and shipping. Starting with the first go-live at one warehouse location in 2009, progress has been continuous, and the final rollout will take place this year.
“Everything went very smoothly,” said Carter. “Because of Ensemble, we could leverage a lot of the testing and communications capabilities that are built into Warehouse XT. That saved us a lot of time.”
Benefits from the massive initiative include:
- Picking errors reduced by 75 percent: By using bar-code scanning, Goebel can ensure inventory accuracy and verify in real-time that the correct items are sent to production.
- Picking times cut in half: Warehouse employees are directed to appropriate bin locations and no longer waste time manually searching for items.
- Enhanced information visibility: Item receipts and production picks are visible in real time, both from Warehouse XT and the ERP system. Project managers have a more accurate picture of inventory movements.
- Shorter production schedules: The lag time between item receipt and production has dropped by 60 percent.
- Training time reduced by 50 percent: Training time for new employees has dropped from 80 to 40 hours. Real-time, system-provided directions to appropriate warehouse bin and department locations have reduced the need for training.
“Ensemble’s contribution to benefits delivery at Goebel can’t be overstated. InterSystems technologies provide scalability, robustness and stability, which are extremely important to Goebel,” Carter noted. “Ensemble is a key part of our business strategy as it has enabled us to diversify into new markets. And we know that when we run into critical issues, the InterSystems Worldwide Response Center will give us immediate response, 24×7.”
“DCCXT has used Ensemble to seamlessly integrate highly complex systems in a multi-location implementation and plans to leverage that achievement to expand its customer base,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “It’s a pleasure to partner with DCCXT as they move forward.”
