InterSystems HealthShare Platform Enables Rapid Care Delivery for Early Users
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—August 31, 2011— InterSystems Corporation, a global leader in software for connected care, today announced that the Brooklyn Health Information Exchange (BHIX) is now providing breakthrough electronic health record (EHR) connectivity that is expected to dramatically speedup care delivery for BHIX clinicians. “The advanced functionality enables physicians to securely access patient records via the InterSystems HealthShare-based BHIX network directly from an eClinicalWorks EHR with just one click,” said BHIX Executive Director Irene Koch. “This seamless interconnectivity makes it possible to share patient data and improve patient care coordination across the entire community served by BHIX,” she continued.
BHIX is an independent, not-for-profit corporation devoted to facilitating patient-centered care within and across healthcare settings. BHIX seeks to improve healthcare quality, affordability and outcomes, while safeguarding the confidentiality of patient information, for millions of patients seeking and receiving health care throughout Brooklyn.
“Many organizations are working to provide the improved care delivery made possible by a deeply interoperable EHR. However, we believe that eClinicalWorks is the first to offer one-click capabilities and that its implementation with full integration at every level on the BHIX HealthShare-based network is the first in New York City,” Koch said.
“Through all of our work with healthcare providers, we’ve found that making access to aggregated data as easy as possible is key to success,” said Koch. “One option is through single sign-on access to the BHIX system. The other way is to use the most forward-thinking interoperability standards to enable seamless, bidirectional data flow directly from the EHR. With this new functionality, BHIX matches patient records, establishes consent and returns the aggregated document into the eClinicalWorks EHR,” Koch explained. “With time pressure and ease of use becoming more important than ever, the fact that the physician never has to leave the EHR in order to obtain all of the patient data available is an extremely important benefit.”
Seamless Workflow Using National Standards
Adherence to national standards was a major focus for the project team that developed the new one-click EHR, according to Kate Nixon, Project Manager for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Primary Care Information Project. “We made it a priority to use national standards so that this capability could be leveraged by other technology partners,” she said. The HealthShare solution used by BHIX is a strategic health care informatics platform that conforms to the architectures prescribed by the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise and Connecting for Health organizations, and also implements common data exchange standards. “The InterSystems team working in tandem with BHIX was very knowledgeable and provided valuable input about standards and protocols throughout the development effort,” Nixon commented.
Dr. Edward Fitzpatrick, a primary care physician who is affiliated with Brooklyn-based Maimonides Medical Center, is the first provider in New York City to use the new one-click EHR. “Once I access the EHR, I can then get to additional patient information from all participating BHIX providers with just one click,” he said. The result of the smoother workflow and faster access to patient data is “better quality of care delivery,” Fitzpatrick said. Noting that provider organizations of all sizes would benefit from the new BHIX capability, Fitzpatrick maintained that “whether you’re a sole practitioner, a group practice, a hospital or an integrated delivery network (IDN) like Maimonides, this is a great way to go.”
Building on success, BHIX has rolled out the new seamless connection to multiple sites and practices using the eClinicalWorks EHR. “We’ve effectively demonstrated the smooth scalability and high efficiencies being achieved with this new facility,” Koch noted. “Two new integrations—a sole practitioner and a group practice—are already under way and the next step will be to go live in a hospital,” she said. “Certainly, some additional Federally Qualified Health Centers will have this technology by year-end,” Koch continued. “With a single click from within the eClinicalWorks EHR, they’ll all be getting access to all of the provider and payer data available on the BHIX network for a patient, which means they’ll all be getting the benefits that we’ve already seen in the initial implementation.”
“InterSystems is pleased to provide the strategic informatics platform that is the foundation for further optimizing care delivery and enabling improved engagement among providers, hospitals and IDNs,” said Dominick Bizzarro, InterSystems Business Manager for HealthShare. “We look forward to continuing our highly successful working partnership with BHIX, which is focused on supporting improved care delivery wherever and whenever possible.”
