CAM Equestrian uses Caché Post-Relational Database for Europe’s Largest Online Equestrian Supermarket
Eton, UK – April 9, 2001 – Post-relational database specialists, InterSystems, has announced that CAM Equestrian, Europe’s largest online equestrian and equine supermarket, has selected the Caché post-relational database to develop its e-business infrastructure.
CAM Equestrian supplies thousands of products for all aspects of equestrian life, including goods and services for riders, horses, stable and tack rooms, the yard and field, as well as materials for joinery and buildings. The company’s database includes approximately 120,000 customers throughout the UK and Europe.
Morris Walker of CAM Equestrian says that Cache’s ability to handle the high volume needed – the Website displays over 5,000 products – at the speed needed was among the reasons it was chosen. Caché also allows high levels of customisation and it is planned to display catalogues and prices in multiple languages and currencies, as well as offering a choice of American, Imperial, or metric sizes.
“In my experience the vast majority of downloads on similar Websites are very slow, with most taking more than a minute to present one page. This simply isn’t acceptable for our business. Now thanks to Cache’s post-relational structure and object-based technology, we can display a picture within seconds,” says Walker.
InterSystems reports that Cache’ has been shown to offer up to 20 times the SQL performance of databases built on the relational model. “Also,” adds Walker, “we were able to customise it to our specific requirements, while at the same time protecting the speed, quality, and transaction volume of our system.”
Morris Walker’s background in software meant he took a personal interest in the implementation. Also, he was particularly determined to produce a robust site which was easy to use and just as fast, if not faster to use, than traditional mail order procedures.
Every page is built around who the customer is and where they are located. As Walker explains: “For instance, we don’t supply wheelbarrows to the Virgin Islands, so that product doesn’t appear when a customer from there visits the site.” It also enables them to present different information to different specialist groups – for example, a riding group may have a customised front page dedicated to riding and trade or wholesale pricing is presented according to who is accessing the site.
