Ensemble Delivers Rapid Development and Deployment Needed for Successful Implementations
Cambridge, MA – November 8, 2004 – InterSystems Corporation today announced that Athena Diagnostics, a noted innovator in the laboratory testing sector, has gone live with three new applications built on the Ensemble universal integration platform.
InterSystems develops and markets the Ensemble universal integration platform and the CACHÉ post-relational database. Athena Diagnostics is a reference laboratory specializing in the development and commercialization of diagnostic testing for neurological disorders.
Rapid Development, Deployment Underlie IT Strategy
“We have a strategy that calls for doing more with less while simultaneously ensuring the best possible service to our customer base,” says Athena Diagnostics Vice President of Information Technology Mark Smith. “One result of that strategy has been a focus in the IT area on integrating disparate systems and databases in order to leverage information enterprise-wide.”
After examining multiple integration platforms, Athena Diagnostics selected Ensemble. “We run very lean in terms of IT personnel, so the rapid development and deployment that Ensemble delivers was an important consideration,” according to Smith. “I felt that we could achieve our aggressive integration objectives without putting an impossible burden on the IT staff. In addition,” he continues, “we’ve been using InterSystems’ CACHÉ post-relational database for several years. We have been extremely satisfied with InterSystems’ high level of customer support and knew we’d have a strong working partner as we moved forward with the Ensemble projects.”
Success Across the Board
The Ensemble-based systems that Athena Diagnostics has rolled out include:
- E-System Management Alarm—Monitors key systems, displays results on a graphical dashboard built with Ensemble’s Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) framework and automatically notifies staff via a cellphone if specified parameters are exceeded.
- E-Letter Manager—Integrates information from a Misys lab information system with Microsoft Office to automatically create letters that deliver test results to Athena Diagnostics customers.
- E-Data Coordination Manager—Verifies customer information stored on multiple internal databases against information from multiple public Web sites to automatically eliminate duplicates and data inconsistencies.
“The increased productivity and customer satisfaction that we’re projecting from these integration projects position us to compete more effectively than ever,” says Smith. “And the empowerment Ensemble is bringing to the IT staff as they deliver applications more rapidly than was previously possible is creating enormous positive energy,” he notes.
More Integration Projects to Come
Building on its success, Athena Diagnostics shortly will be implementing the pilot for another Ensemble-based system. Dubbed E-Notification, the orchestration solution will automatically recognize changes in the status of lab tests stored in the Misys system. If a change notification is warranted, information will be extracted from the company’s customer database, an appropriate e-mail message will be constructed, and the message will be delivered via the company’s Microsoft Exchange system.
“We’re focusing on delivering the highest level of response to our customers,” Smith says. “Some of the complex neurological tests can take up to six weeks to complete, with doctors and patients anxiously awaiting results. E-Notification will ensure delivery of the latest information available as well as dramatically reduce the volume of calls to our call center. I can think of 20 more projects where we can use Ensemble and our staff is looking forward to starting on them,” he concludes.
“It’s a real privilege to see how customers like Athena Diagnostics are using Ensemble to rapidly build and deploy integrated systems,” says InterSystems Managing Director of Application Integration Trevor Matz. “We’re very pleased to be able to deliver the strategic integration platform they need to achieve their business goals.”
