Scale Healthcare Systems to Millions of Users and Trillions of References per Day
Presented by: Peter Lesperance, Director of Performance Engineering, Epic
17 minutes
Watch this exclusive session where leaders from Epic and InterSystems reveal how they pushed performance limits to achieve real-world scale that serves clinicians and patients alike.

Why This Matters
In today’s healthcare ecosystem, scale has no limits. With mission-critcal systems supporting thousands of sites and millions of patient interactions in real time, the margin for error is razor thin. You’ll learn how:
- A bold target of 100 million global references per second (Grefs) became the new “normal” for large Epic customers
- Continuous performance gains led to over 100% improvements in CPU utilization and response times are now driving smoother clinician workflows
- A developer-to-developer partnership model turned collaboration into scale and innovation into outcomes

Peter Lesperance
Senior Director of Performance Engineering
Peter has been with Epic for nearly 20 years and currently leads the Performance Engineering team. Since joining the team in 2019, he has overseen critical scalability initiatives, including increasing the Epic on InterSystems IRIS database sizing limit from 30 million to 225 million global references per second. His team is responsible for evaluating and stress-testing the platforms that organizations use to deploy Epic software, with a strong focus on optimizing the performance of the InterSystems IRIS data platform. Peter works closely with InterSystems and a broad ecosystem of platform partners, including Intel, AMD, IBM, and VMware, to push the boundaries of what's possible in large-scale health system performance.
