About DeepSee
InterSystems DeepSee™ is software that makes it possible to embed real-time business intelligence (BI) capabilities in transactional systems for better operational decisions.
DeepSee is designed to address the growing demand for BI that uses fresh operational data—the data that is used by core, run-the-business transactional applications. DeepSee significantly broadens the use of BI to users at all organization levels, driving more effective day-to-day execution across the enterprise. This is in direct contrast to traditional BI offerings that depend on specialized data experts working with complex tools as they analyze information stored in data warehouses. As David Stodder, industry analyst with Ventana Research has stated, “Companies are looking to operational BI to gain a better view of their customers, improve day-to-day decision-making and, ultimately, increase efficiency."iDesigned for Speed, Flexibility
DeepSee's design reflects its positioning as a high-performance, cost-effective alternative to traditional BI products. DeepSee includes four components:
Architect—Data models are defined based on current transactional data; no data warehouse is required. Bitmap indices are created to enable optimal application performance.
Analyzer—Using data models defined by the Architect, pivot tables, and graphs are rapidly created using point-and-click/drag-and-drop capabilities.
Designer—Based on output from the Analyzer, dashboards that can include interactive controls such as combo-boxes, lists, radio buttons, and links are built as Web pages that can be embedded in the application.
Connector—An open design enables extracting data from external sources other than InterSystems database technology for data modeling.
Real-time Operational BI at Work
The transition to embedded real-time operational BI is taking place across multiple industries worldwide. Some examples include:
Healthcare—A laboratory testing device fails and results for a certain blood test are suddenly incorrect. Lives can be threatened for as long as the problem goes unrecognized. With embedded BI capabilities, recognizing a device failure and providing a real-time alert eliminates the potential for medical mistakes.
Retail—Call center agents rely on operational BI to deliver real-time information on previous orders and buying patterns as they are speaking with customers. As a result, the agent can cross-sell by recommending complementary products as well as predict when a reorder will be necessary, and, in some cases, even track their own sales performance.
Financial Services—Managers can monitor every branch office to compare the results of local marketing campaigns at any point during the customer service process. Depending on the information delivered by operational BI, decisions can be made in real time to implement campaigns that are proving successful in other locations—a promotion for a high interest bearing account, for example—and to immediately cut off promotions that aren't working effectively in certain locations.
Scenarios such as these illustrate the significant benefits of embedding real-time BI in core transactional systems. DeepSee has been specifically developed to enable organizations to rapidly and cost-effectively transition to a real-time operational BI environment.
