SYDNEY, Australia and ETON, United Kingdom, February 18, 2021. -- InterSystems today announced that users of its InterSystems TrakCare® unified healthcare information system now have access to an appointment booking system to schedule COVID vaccinations that has already saved one regional health board more than 500 hours of call centre time over 16 days when booking NHS staff vaccination appointments.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. & WASHINGTON -- Since COVID-19 arrived in the United States in early 2020, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been diligently working to protect one of the nation’s most vulnerable populations: veterans.
As the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, dying patients’ family members found themselves in an impossible situation: they didn’t know how their loved ones wanted to pass away. Without that information, healthcare providers had little power to enact appropriate end-of-life care plans. And patients whose lives were already cut short by a painful disease suffered the consequences.
The health of thousands of kids hung in the balance. By mid-March, Damien Carey, integration team supervisor for Florida-based Nemours Children’s Health System, had undertaken a sprawling telehealth expansion. The risk of COVID-19 infection drove Nemours to transition nearly all outpatient visits to virtual care.
In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people in China did whatever they could to avoid hospitals. But as the outbreak grew and communities enacted stay-at-home restrictions, one team from InterSystems ran to the frontlines.
COVID-19 Ushers in a Rousing Remote Go-live As New Zealand went into one of the world’s strictest lockdowns to thwart the spread of COVID-19 in March, teams from one of Auckland’s premier hospital groups, MercyAscot, and InterSystems were working on a go-live of TrakCare’s patient administration and billing functionality, the first stage of a full clinical deployment. The team knew the less time between preparation and go live, the higher the likelihood that staff would retain all of the hard work they’d already completed. According to MercyAscot’s Project Director, Sarah Gardner, “the longer we waited, the more difficult it would have been.”
By March, when the Italian region of Lazio directed Gemelli Hospital to lead its clinical response to COVID-19, the pandemic had turned the world’s attention to the nation. Italy instituted a strict lockdown as the death toll climbed, chiefly in the northern regions. Rome, where Gemelli is based, was bracing for impact.
In 2013, Lincolnshire, the fourth largest county in England, undertook a major review aimed at transforming its health and social care services. The goal was to move healthcare out of hospitals and situate it closer to patients’ homes wherever possible.
Scenes from Italy at the dawn of the pandemic seemed otherworldly. Patients, often struggling to breathe, lined cramped hallways and waiting rooms in hospitals that had run out of beds. The death toll leaped into the thousands, warning the rest of the world of COVID-19’s propensity for ruin.
University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) has been leveraging InterSystems HealthShare® Health Connect to power critical data flows across multiple systems to alert clinicians and manage patients with COVID-19 diagnosis within the hospital.
The eHealth Exchange active in all 50 states is the oldest and largest national health information network in the U.S.
As New York City emerged as the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, the demand for reliable, accessible healthcare data grew increasingly urgent. Healthix, the nation’s largest public health information exchange, serving more than 20 million patients, rose to the challenge by immediately developing COVID-19 Alerts.
By mid-March, Nebraska was facing a challenge unlike any other. As the coronavirus spread through the Heartland, the need for all healthcare providers to quickly report data on hospital admissions, lab testing, and other medical events became vital to the state’s response.
Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH) has been leveraging InterSystems HealthShare® and Health Insight to increase the visibility of COVID-19 diagnoses among the healthcare team. In response to the pandemic, the Health Information Exchange (HIE) team at PSJH rapidly implemented two new ways to help physicians on the front line fight and manage the COVID-19 crisis by alerting them of patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.
InterSystems Italy When COVID-19 hit Italy in March, hospitals had to quickly change their organizations to face the challenge of treating an exceptional number of unplanned patients.

For a Patient-centric Pandemic Response, Follow the Data
As the COVID-19 case count began to rise in Texas, so too did life-or-death questions. Where is the virus spreading? Which underlying conditions make patients vulnerable to bad outcomes? And what best practice protocols were emerging for caregivers to help the ill?

Whether they suffered great losses in the COVID-19 pandemic or escaped the worst of its wrath, communities around the world are bracing for a second wave. It’s the top concern for nearly every health system leader and public health official: How will they manage another outbreak, which may well dwarf the first?

There are many models for delivering EMR-enabled telehealth services, and we are pleased to announce the expansion of our own offering using TrakCare. In an earlier issue of the OnTrak News Flash, we described our initial Skype integration, which was a quick-and-easy way to launch Skype calls in context directly from the patient record. Our expanded telehealth framework is flexible in that it can be deployed with tools other than Skype by a patient providing their personal ID, email address, or phone number.
