Advisory: FHIR Server Search Chaining May Return Incomplete or Incorrect Results on Certain Parameters

This problem affects the following products:

  • InterSystems IRIS® for Health
  • HealthShare® Health Connect (with FHIR server add-on)

The following versions are affected:

  • 2024.1.0
  • 2024.1.1
  • 2024.1.2
  • 2024.1.3
  • 2024.1.4
  • 2024.2.0
  • 2024.3.0

Requirements:

  • FHIR Server
  • FHIR Search with chained search parameters across an entire population of patients

Affected InterSystems IRIS for Health and Health Connect versions may return missing or incorrect resources in FHIR Search interactions on a small number of queries utilizing chained search parameters across an entire population of patients.

This is caused by a small number of self-referencing parameters on specified resources expected to be queried in a few operational (but not clinical or patient care) settings.

Six FHIR search parameters that support chaining (searching against reference target search parameters) may return incomplete or incorrect result sets in operational settings. The full list of affected search parameters in FHIR R4 are:

  • ClinicalImpression.previous
  • Consent.source
  • DeviceDefinition.parentDevice
  • Encounter.partOf
  • Location.partOf
  • Organization.partOf

The correction for this defect is identified as IF-7898. It is available for affected versions via ad hoc change file (patch) or full kit.
