Advisory: Some FHIR Queries that use _include and _revinclude Fail Silently

March 1, 2022 – Advisory: Some FHIR Queries that use _include and _revinclude Fail Silently

This problem affects the following products:

  • HealthShare Unified Care Record 2019.1.x, 2019.2, 2020.1, 2020.2
  • IRIS for Health 2019.4, 2020.1, 2020.2, 2020.3, 2020.4, 2021.1

This advisory encompasses two distinct issues related to the use of _include and _revinclude search parameters in FHIR queries:

  1. Some FHIR resource references allow a reference to a resource of any type. The indices for these references were not being calculated properly, resulting in failed searches when using _include and _revinclude.
  2. An improperly formatted query using _include or _revinclude fails silently rather than reporting an error to the client.

In both cases, the returned resultset does not include the requested included resources, but the client is unaware of the error.

The correction for this defect is identified as IF-1899/HSIEC-6196 and was addressed starting in HealthShare 2021.1 and InterSystems IRIS for Health 2021.2. For more information and available fixes for this issue, please refer to IF-1899/HSIEC-6196 when speaking with the Worldwide Response Center (WRC).
