CUSTOMER: 3M Health Information Systems

CHALLENGE: Integrate multiple coding, clinical documentation improvement, and performance monitoring processes on a single platform.

OUTCOME: New system using InterSystems integration engine results in substantial productivity improvements for inpatient and outpatient coding.

There’s nothing complex about healthcare, right? It’s just you and your doctor. But behind that very simple and human encounter lies a beast of complexity. Every aspect of the encounter has to be documented. And it has to be coded – each diagnosis and procedure has a corresponding number – for reimbursement and other purposes.

With the use of a much more detailed coding standard (ICD-10), 3M Health Information Systems took aim at the complexity by integrating multiple coding, clinical documentation improvement, and performance monitoring processes on a single platform using InterSystems technology.

The resulting product, 3M™ 360 Encompass™ System, increases process automation, simplifies the use of ICD-10, and reduces the inefficiencies of multiple coding and documentation processes and the added costs of unconnected systems.

“The 3M 360 Encompass System enables substantial productivity improvements for both inpatient and outpatient coding – the result of deep integration, advanced natural language processing technology, and greater workflow efficiency,” says Michael Bee, Business Director for 3M 360 Encompass.

Healthcare Providers
Surprisingly, the top three indicators of life expectancy in the U.S. for a given population are per capita nursing home residency, mental health challenges, and prevalence of tooth loss¹. The income level, access to care, stress, and other social factors behind these indicators have a greater impact on health than genetics or access to healthcare services². However, historically, social determinants of health have not received enough attention in clinical care.
Integration Across the Delivery Network (IDN)
The developers at this large U.S. integrated delivery network (IDN) have no patience for integration engines that mindlessly do one job and one job only. Since replacing an old engine with InterSystems integration technology over a decade ago, the IDN has seen InterSystems solutions solve multiple problems to power growth, save employee time, and reduce costs. In one project alone, InterSystems saved them $100,000. Other examples of benefits delivered using InterSystems integration technology include:
As healthcare payers and providers use different information systems, patients can get caught in the middle and forced to bridge the gap with cumbersome processes.
Personalized Digital Nurse
Older adults overwhelmingly say they prefer to remain in their homes even as they face increasingly complex healthcare needs. And with good reason. They can retain their independence, remain socially engaged with their communities and, overall, have a higher quality of life, which contributes to improved physical health.
