Schlumberger Chooses CACHÉ from InterSystems for EIR

Eton, UK—May 29, 2003—SchlumbergerSema, the information technology business segment of Schlumberger and leading supplier of IT consulting, systems integration and network and infrastructure services, has chosen to migrate its highly successful EIR (Equipment Identity Register) application for mobile operators to CACHÉ post-relational database technology from InterSystems. Terry McCabe, vice president SchlumbergerSema Montreal Telecom Product Centre, says this decision was taken because of the price/performance advantages CACHÉ will bring to the EIR solution.

CACHÉ is a powerful, scalable solution, proven to be many times faster than other commercially available databases. It runs on a much reduced hardware footprint and is ideal for “lights out” operations such as the SchlumbergerSema EIR where low maintenance and limited database administration are key requirements.

The move follows the success of the SchlumbergerSema CIMS (Consolidated Information Management System) SMS tracking application, which runs on CACHÉ and is currently generating considerable international interest.

The SchlumbergerSema EIR enables mobile network providers to “switch off” stolen mobile phones even if the SIM is changed. Supplied as a turnkey solution, it means that telecoms companies can fight phone theft actively, deterring the thief and reassuring their customers.

The decision to change databases came when the previous system would no longer support the solution’s OpenVMS operating system environment. CACHÉ runs on most major platforms, including Windows, OpenVMS, Linux and UNIX and has shown a firm commitment to continuing support of OpenVMS.

“From our experience of working with InterSystems in South Africa, we knew that CACHÉ’s technology gives us the speed we need – for CIMS it was running 10 to 15 times faster on comparable hardware – while enabling us to offer applications that are cost-effective and highly marketable,” says McCabe.

CACHÉ’s multidimensional data structures mean applications do not need to reassemble data from fragmented tables. This eliminates processing overheads so applications run faster. Because CACHÉ is so fast – tests show that it can deliver rapid in-memory search performance between 20 and 100 times faster than well-known relational databases – it uses less memory and supports more users on the same hardware platform, reducing cost per user.

This much reduced hardware footprint ensures that solutions are cost-effective, so maximizing return on investment (ROI). “CACHÉ’s reduced footprint, using either UNIX or new telco-grade Linux systems, means that the price point falls, as does total cost of ownership, increasing the possibility of winning new initiatives,” explains Chris Norton, InterSystems’ sales manager.

He adds that CACHÉ’s design offers clients the flexibility to interrogate and report on the data in a myriad of different ways. In this way, it provides for as yet unseen future requirements such as using CACHÉ to present Web-based information to customer service operatives.

Graham Frost, InterSystems’ managing director, says that the growing demand for CACHÉ in the telecoms sector is understandable given the rigorous market: “CACHÉ allows extremely rapid application development followed by lightning fast performance, making applications highly-competitive and cost-effective.
